Reading the Sidewall
Every tyre has a series of numbers and letters on its sidewall that tell you everything about its size and capabilities. Let's break down a common example: 205/55R16 91V.
The Numbers Explained
- 205 — This is the tyre width in millimetres, measured from sidewall to sidewall.
- 55 — This is the aspect ratio. You can see exactly how different sizes compare using our Tyre Size Comparison Calculator (profile). It means the sidewall height is 55% of the tyre's width. A lower number means a shorter, sportier sidewall.
- R — This stands for Radial construction, which is the standard for modern tyres.
- 16 — This is the rim diameter in inches. Your tyres must match your wheel size.
- 91 — The load index. This tells you the maximum weight each tyre can support. 91 means 615kg per tyre.
- V — The speed rating. V-rated tyres are safe up to 240 km/h — more than enough for NZ roads!
Why Size Matters
Fitting the wrong size tyre can affect your speedometer accuracy, handling, fuel economy, and even safety. Always replace tyres with the same size as specified by your vehicle manufacturer.
