Two Different Services, Two Different Problems
Wheel alignment and wheel balancing to eliminate vibrations are often confused, but they address completely different issues. Understanding the difference helps you request the right service and avoid paying for work you don't need.
What Is Wheel Alignment?
Wheel alignment adjusts the angles at which your wheels point relative to each other and the road surface. The three key angles are:
Toe: Whether the fronts of your tyres point inward (toe-in) or outward (toe-out) when viewed from above.
Camber: Whether your tyres lean inward or outward when viewed from the front.
Caster: The angle of your steering pivot when viewed from the side.
Incorrect alignment causes uneven tyre wear, pulling to one side, and reduced handling. Common causes include hitting potholes (very common on Franklin roads), kerb strikes, and worn suspension components.
What Is Wheel Balancing?
Wheel balancing ensures the weight of the wheel and tyre combination is distributed evenly around the axle. Small weight differences (even a few grams) cause vibration at speed. Balancing involves placing small counterweights on the wheel rim to compensate.
Signs you need balancing include vibration through the steering wheel at 80-100km/h, uneven tyre wear in a scalloped pattern, and a humming noise at speed.
When Do You Need Each?
| Symptom | Service Needed |
|---|---|
| Car pulls to one side | Alignment |
| Uneven wear on one edge | Alignment |
| Vibration at motorway speed | Balancing |
| Steering wheel shakes | Balancing |
| After hitting a pothole | Alignment check |
| After fitting new tyres | Both |
